Evan Ross
Owner & Founder
Holy Compost & Recycling is owned by Evan Ross. Evan has been concerned with the environment since he was a small child in New York City. Growing up near Central Park, he and his family collected pop tops and often reused and recycled them in creative ways. Over the years, living across the country and completing his PhD dissertation on a city in Brazil known for environmentally friendly urban planning, Evan has always focused on the importance of green space and rejuvenating the environment. A dedicated community volunteer, Evan has served as a Spanish instructor at San Quentin Prison, with Hospice Care, The Hospitality House for Women, and Rome Community Kitchen, among other nonprofits. Holy Compost & Recycling commits to serving our local non-profits by providing free or reduced-fee service whenever possible. Volunteerism is one of the aspects of life that bring him great joy. Evan also enjoys doing “holy work” in his day-to-day life. Wherever he can, he takes walks in his free time and collects recyclables. Evan lives in Rome with his two kids and dog, Innu.

Why the gnomes?
Garden gnomes have long been a beloved and whimsical addition to gardens worldwide. Gnomes’ roots are traced back to ancient folklore and mythology. In many ancient cultures, such as the Romans and Greeks, statues of mythical creatures were commonly placed in gardens to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. These statues were believed to protect the plants and promote a bountiful harvest.

Today, garden gnomes continue to be a beloved and iconic presence in gardens worldwide. Whether seen as protectors, companions, or simply decorative elements, these enchanting statues remind us of our deep-rooted connection to nature and the rich tapestry of folklore that has shaped our collective imagination.

Long before Holy Compost & Recycling was founded, our owner, Evan, lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, where space for composting was at a premium. He began to dig holes for his compost, marking each hole with a garden gnome. When the gnomes sunk into the ground, he knew the compost was ready! These holes also led to the name “Holy” (holey) Compost!
